Alcohol Consumption – what is an alcohol related problem?

Alcohol Addiction DerbyI was reading today that 38% of our population has alcohol related problems, but what is a problem and do I have one?

Its so lovely to sit after a hard day working, with a glass of cool, crisp white wine reflecting on the clients I’ve seen, but if it’s a school night, I’ll make sure its just the one, which is one unit, isn’t it? So over the week that would be seven(ish) units, well under my 14 units a week. But I seem to be living in my own world, looking at the unit calculator, my one 175ml glass is 2.1 units and I always make sure the glass is filled to the top, perhaps 175ml is pushing it a little.  But I don’t binge drink, I’m not dependant on alcohol and certainly wouldn’t say I’m an alcoholic, so the term ‘habitually consumer’ seems to describe me, apparently this means more than twice a week and a means of changing one’s mood or state of consciousness without effort. Yes, this sounds like me.

I remember as a child my parents used to relax with a nice cup of tea and actually they still do, every night after their dinner, they’re out in the garden, sitting under the tree with a mug of tea, at least its not a cup and saucer now, that seemed to disappear when teabags arrived!

So could I go and visit a friends house for the evening and take a decent bottle of sparkling water or a new blend of teabag, no I can’t see it happening but I will make sure I take the governments advice and restrain from drinking a couple of times a week and keep within my limits all of the time, well most of the time, ok occasionally!
